US Open Final Qualifying

Michael Thompson will be competing in the final stage of US Open qualifying at the Springfield Country Club tomorrow in Springfield,  Ohio.  He will be competing with 76 other golfers for a number of spots at this year's US Open which will take place at Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA.

Michael will be teeing off at 8:45am local time.

Thompson's US Open Sectional Qualifying Bid Happens Tomorrow

Michael Thompson and 116 other US Open hopefuls will go through the US Open Sectional Qualifying stage tomorrow in Memphis, Tennessee.  The stage will consist of 36 holes played on two courses over a single day.  This year's qualifying will be played at the Ridgeway Country Club and at the Colonial Country Club (South Course).  There are 11 spots up for grabs.

Michael will be playing with fellow professional Jonathan Byrd and amateur Davis Riley.  They will start at the Colonial Country Club South Course and will tee off from the tenth hole at 8:39am CDT.

As of now (9:30 PDT), Michael's name disappeared from the scoring link.  There are still 117 golfers listed so I'm not sure if he withdrew and someone replaced him in the field or if there is an error on the website.

Update: (10:05 PDT): Michael withdrew from the qualifier due to a neck injury.  He's hoping to get right before this week's Fedex St. Jude Classic  (per Jonathon Wall on Twitter).

It's US Open Qualifying Time!

Today marks the sectional qualifying stage for the 2016 US Open.  Michael Thompson will be competing in Memphis, Tennessee.  The qualifying will take place over two rounds at the Germantown Country Club and the Ridgeway Country Club.

There are 121 golfers competing for an unknown number of spots.  This is one of the two stronger fields for the sectionals since many PGA Tour players who are competing in this week's St. Jude Classic will be using the Memphis Qualifying as their venue of choice.  The number of spots available gets determined by the strength of the field.

I think scoring will be posted after each 9 holes during round one and then gets updated more frequently during round two.

Update #1 - 7:47am PT
Michael shot one under on the front nine at the Ridgeway Country Club  

Update #2 - 9:12am PT

There will be 10 spots awarded to the Memphis qualifying.

Update #3 - 11:00am PT

Michael finished his first round at two under par.  He carded four birdies and two bogeys.  He is roughly two shots off a qualifying spot so he'll need a solid second round to punch his ticket to the 2016 US Open..

Update #4 - 11:08am PT

Hole by hole scoring is now available.  Michael parred his first hole of the second round (hole #10 at the Germantown Country Club).

Update #5 - 2:42pm PT

Michael is two under with four holes remaining.  He will have to shoot at least three under over those remaining holes to make into the top 10 but he does have one par five to go.

Update #6 - 3:06pm PT

Michael is two under with only three holes remaining.  The cut has moved to six under par so he needs to go four under in his final three holes in order to grab a spot in this year's US Open field.

Update #7 - 7:21pm PT

Michael finished at two under and tied for 34th.  He was four shots from making the playoff.  He will now focus on this week's St. Jude Classic.

2015 US Open Sectional Qualifying Day

Michael Thompson will be competing in the 2015 US Open sectional qualifying tournament in Rockville, Maryland tomorrow.  He will be competing with 55 other players for a number of spots into this year's US Open and will tee off at 7:36am ET.

The Woodmont Country Club will be hosting this year's qualifying in Rockville just has it has for 28 of the last 29 years.  The sectional qualifying is a 36 hole tournament.  The exact number of spots at the each site hasn't been published yet.

US Open Sectional Qualifying

From the Memorial to US Open Sectional Qualifying

After Friday's rough day on the greens, Michael Thompson righted the ship at the Memorial Tournament and shot a couple of steady, if not spectacular, rounds over the weekend to finish in a tie for 37th.

Monday brings one of the most exciting day in the golfing calendar as nearly half the field of this year's US Open at Pinehurst will be filled at sectional qualifying tournaments across the country.  Michael will be competing at the Columbus, Ohio venue where 120 golfers will compete for 16 spots.  Golfers will compete in two rounds at two different courses.  The Columbus qualifier will utilize the Brookside Golf & Country Club and Scioto Country Club.  Michael will be playing alongside Colt Knost and Cameron Percy.

The Columbus qualifier will be posting scores after the front and back nines of the first round and then live hole-by-hole scoring will be posted for the second round.

36 Holes for a Coveted Spot in the US Open

For hundreds of golfers, both amateur and professional, tomorrow is a day in which dreams can come true or be put on hold for another year.  Across the United States, sectional qualifying tournaments will be held to fill the field for the 2012 US Open.  Each tournament will be 36 holes in length over the day with a coveted spot in the US Open awarded to the top players in each event.

Michael Thompson will be playing in the sectional qualifier at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.  He will be competing with 77 other golfers for 7 spots.  His first round gets started at 7:20am.

Update:
Michael posted a second round of -4 and is in the clubhouse at -2.  He is currently T2 and now has to wait to see if has punched his ticket to the 2012 US Open.
