Quick Start has Thompson Tied for 36th

Michael Thompson got off to a fast start at the John Deere Classic in the first round today when he recorded three straight birdies on holes #2 through #4 reaching three under par after just four holes.  Unfortunately, Michael wasn't able to sustain that torrid pace and ultimately finished the first round at two under par and is currently tied for 36th.  He will tee off in the second round at 1:45pm ET on Friday with Steven Bowditch and Charles Howell III.

Oh So Close!

There's no doubt that Michael Thompson had a great week at the Greenbrier Classic as he finished the week tied for 11th.  But he came oh so close to punching his ticket for the Open Championship in two weeks.  Four spots were up for grabs and Michael came a single shot short of grabbing one of them.  He'll compete next week at the John Deere Classic where one more spot is available.

After his round Michael tweeted
1 shot away from qualifying for The Open today. #heartbreak One more chance next week.
Despite coming up short for an Open Championship spot, his T11th finish marks Michael's seventh top 25 finish out of 19 events on the year.  In fact, all seven of his top 25 finishes were actually top 20 finishes.  He only has one top 10 finish on the year but he's finished tied for 11th twice.  He's also made 14 out of 19 cuts on the year.

He is now ranked 88th in FedexCup points.  When the playoffs start on August 21st, the top 125 on the FedexCup points list earn their way into the first playoff event, the Barclays.

Thompson Does Some Serious Moving on Moving Day

Michael Thompson made the most of his moving day by posting a field leading six under par 64 and moved up the leaderboard 31 spots and is currently tied for fourth.  He played a nearly flawless round with his lone blemish coming on the first hole where he missed a 23 inch par putt for his lone bogey on the day.  After that his round was highlighted by an eagle on hole #12 and five birdies including a birdie on the par 3 18th hole.

Tomorrow, Michael will be trying to grab an autonomic invitation into the Open Championship.   Spots for the top four golfers (and ties) who aren't already in the field will be given a berth into the third major championship of the year.

He will be playing in Sunday's penultimate group with Kevin Chappell.  They tee off at 1:55pm ET.
