Sweet Home Alabama

by Roz Roberts III

Let's face it...Michael Thompson is fighting to keep his PGA Tour card for next year.  He currently sits 134th on the FedexCup points list.  By the end of the season only the top 125 on that list will be assured of their card's for next year.   He needs one more good finish to secure his status for next year and this week presents a unique opportunity for him.

The PGA Tour returns to Alabama for the first time since 1990 for the Barbasol Championship while a large chunk of the PGA Tour regulars are in Scotland competing in the Open Championship.  Michael has had success in the Auburn area and he should feel at home being near Birmingham.

In an interview with Tim Gayle (see the link below for the whole article)  Michael said

“I look at it as an opportunity because it’s a weaker field.  There are guys that aren’t playing as much anymore and a lot of guys from the Web.com who are hungry. This is exciting for them, whereas for the PGA TOUR card holders, it’s a smaller event."

“For me, I have to look at it like I’ve got a really good chance of having a good finish. And if I do that, I can vault myself up the FedExCup and the money list as well because both of those are qualifications for keeping your card for next year.”

Michael tees off Thursday at 12:44pm ET with Alex Cejka and Derek Ernst from the first hole.
