Golf Is Back This Week

by Roz Roberts III

After a three month pandemic induced hiatus, professional golf in the United States will tee off this week.  Michael Thompson will get back to action in a Korn Ferry event in Florida.  He will be playing in the Korn Ferry Challenge at TPC Sawgrass which will be played on the Pete Dye designed Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville Florida.

The tournament will be sure to be different since no spectators will be allowed based on the current federal and local health guidelines.

The Valley Course, like most Dye courses,, features a variety of  water hazards, strategically-placed bunkers and deceptive angles that force players to concentrate for the entire round. The course will play as a par-70 and measures 6,847 yard.  Holes 8 and 17 are par-4's for member and guest play but will be converted to par-5's for this week’s tournament.  The course should be soft after early week rain but it's inherent difficulty will keep this tournament from run away scoring.

Michael will be grouped with Brian Campbell and Will Zalatoris.  The group will tee off on Thursday at 1:47pm ET from the 10th hole.

Thompson Finishes in Style

Michael Thompson tees off from the tenth hole on the North Course at Torrey Pines in the Framers Insurance Open.

by Roz Roberts III

Michael Thompson saved his best hole in round one of the Farmers Insurance Open for last.  A solid drive off the tee at the 9th hole on the North course left in a position to go for the green on the par 5 hole.  His approach came up just short of the green in the fairway and his chip managed to hit the flagstick and fall in the hole.  It was an exciting moment that erased a few dropped shots on his back nine and ultimately he finished the day at one under par in a tie for 50th.

Tomorrow Michael and his group will be first off the tee from the first hole at the newly renovated South Course at 9:00am PT.

Torrey Pines is Now Even Longer

by Roz Roberts III

The South Course at Torrey Pines has always been one of the longer, most difficult courses on the PGA Tour but in preparation for the 2021 US Open, Rees Jones re-designed the South Course adding some bunkers and new tee boxes and the course can now play at a monster 7.765 yards...the longest of any course to host a PGA Tour event.  Starting tomorrow, Michael Thompson and the rest of the PGA Tour will get their first look at the renovations as the Farmers Insurance Open starts.

Michael will play his first round on the North Course which should play as the easier of the two courses although the North Course was renovated three years ago to make it harder as well.  Michael is grouped with Peter Malnati and Sam Ryder.  They tee off at 10:10am PT from the tenth hole of the North Course.

And the Biggest Mover in Round Two Was...

by Roz Roberts III

Michael Thompson used a bogey free seven under par (65) to move up 76 spots on the leaderboard at the RSM Classic into a tie for 34th.  It was the biggest move of the day.  Michael shot one over par in Thursday's first round and was sitting well outside the cut line.  Michael made the bulk of his move up the leaderboard on Friday with a six hole stretch in which he had five birdies.

Michael will be playing his third round with  Chesson Hadley and David Lingmerth.  The trio tees off from the first hole at 9:30am ET.
